PWA Fuerteventura

PWA Fuerteventura
After my training here in Fuerteventura for 10 days I felt totally ready to face the hard condition Fuerte always has to offer, 3.7 weather, big shop and sometimes even some small waves perfect to see high flying action from everybody and get some exciting heats!
JC/PWA
But looking to the forecast for the event everybody knew it wasn’t going to be any of this at all instead we saw Fuerte from a whole other side, sailing not smaller than 4.3 and even using 4.7 it was totally different then I thought it would be but all by all we had everyday enough wind in the afternoon to sail a whole double elimination.
The single
On the first day the wind kicked in around noon allowing competition to start, wind around 20 knts of wind it was perfect freestyle conditions for 4.3 allowing the show to start. I didn’t feel good in my heats and didn’t sail my best heat so far, I was struggling with the extremely choppy conditions. Not that fuerte not always is choppy but not like this leaving me struggling with even landing burner in my first heat against Levi Lenz, but landed good other moves like kono, culo, shakas on both side and just made sure I landed at least my 3 moves on each side to advance into the next round.
JC/PWA
In my second heat I would meat Antony Ruenes who always can put together strong heats like we saw in Lanzarote. Before the heat I went out and trained on my burners again for 10 min trying to figure out how to get them right in these conditions so I wouldn’t have problems with landing that in the heat as I knew I needed it to win again Antony. The heat went already a lot better than against Levi and I managed to advance against Antony to put myself in that top 8 spot after the single.
JC/PWA
On the second day we finished the single elimination. In the 3rd round I met Golitto Estredo and finally got a good heat together landing a nice skopu, burner, culo and so on but missed a massive burner OH on the way out. In the end Golitto just sailed a better heat to keep it going till the end of the single to put him on first place after the second day of sailing in Fuerteventura.
The double.
In the double I had to wait to see who my opponent would be. The conditions were really flat and it was 4.7 weather instead of 4.3 like the day before with some waves where I felt better in than in the flat conditions. I knew I was going to meet Davy as he was working himself up in the double again and knew I had to sail a good heat to win in the flat conditions which are the conditions where he feels home in. No chance to throw big airmoves like high shaka I gave it my best shot, I sailed a good heat landing burners both side, plaining Culo and a nice high Kono on the way in but couldn’t win as Davy sailed his best heat of the event landing perfect spock-culo and airfunnel into funnel900 on the way out putting me into a 9th place and get me out of my top 8 place.
JC/PWA

In the end it was another top 10 place but in totally different conditions than I expected and looked forward to but next year hopefully will see real Fuerte conditions again and go for a better result! Next up is Sylt end of September which will be all determent for the endranking where I will for sure stay in the top 10 but will have to get a good result to stay in my 8 place as there will be 2 discards after the 7th event.
JC/PWA
The last day there was not enough time anymore to run a single and a double which made us go to an alternative supersession. Everybody who wanted to compete was turned into 4 different heats from around 8 people where the first 2 would advance from into the superfinal. I had a strong first round but opened the heat with a nice big kono to put me already in a very good spot to advance into the super final which I just did behind Steven and in front of Quincy. The super final was fun landing a burner into flaka as only good move I knew I wouldn’t win at all but that didn’t matter for me as everybody just put on a great show for the crowed on the beach. During our latest run all doing a forward was just great! So a nice last day with great fun!

PWA Lanzarote review 7th Place

Hello everybody
After 2 new events in the Caribbean on the PWA it was time to go back to Europe’s most windy islands in the Canaries and pack our Bags for “only” a 4 hour flight to the place where the PWA comes every summer.  First stop on the Canaries is like always Lanzarote with a good forecast it promised to become a good show again.
JC/PWA

The first days of my stay here in Lanzarote I took the time to get a bit used to the conditions and work away my jetlag before the competition would start to be as fit as possible again for already the 3rd competition in row. I also rigged up my spare gear from home as my boardbag would only just arrive on the first day of the competition as they left it behind in Aruba on the way home, but all by all everything just came good in the end having my favorite equipment just 15 min before the first heat on day one.
JC/PWA

The first day we got nice wind conditions blowing around 18-20 knts making it perfect freestyle conditions as there where not to many waves around like you can have here sometimes. In my first heat I had to go against Nicolas Spadea from Italy, I sailed a very good heat pulling of a great repertoire of moves including, burners, skopus, culos, konos and big shakas. Making myself confident for the next heat against Davy Scheffers. That heat I started well in the first 2 min taking the lead in the heat but once I started crashing I didn’t stop anymore, I felt weak as with all the commotion over the missing boardbags I forgot to eat and drink for a couple of hours which was not the best idea. The heat ended up in a disaster, where I started crashing Davy started sailing better and made it sure he would win and I already knew I lost straight away when I came from the water having my worst heat so far on the PWA tour. The only thing I could do was work myself up again in the double.
Time for the double.
After a day of less wind we could finally finish the first single at the 3rd day to start immediately with the double and putting me back in action and giving myself the chance to work myself up again for a good result. In the first heat I met teammate Rick Jendrush who sailed very well the previous heat beating Leo Ray who came back on the Freestyle tour for the first time this year making him an opponent  do not underestimate. With 4 out of 7 moves counting I felt more comfortable and ready to fight myself up again in the double. I gave Rick no chance sailing a very technical heat and making sure I would advance in the next round where I would meet Edvan Da Souza. I saw him already sailing some nice heats but I knew if I kept going like I did against Rick I knew I would win. I crashed a bit more this heat but still made my moves and showed  the judges what they wanted with big Shakas, super fast konos and nice burners on both tacks putting myself in the top 10 to meet Taty Frans where I had to win against to get into the top 8 which is my goal at every event. But that heat hat to wait till day 4 as the wind got weaker towards the evening.
JC/PWA
On day 4 I was in the first heat against Taty in a more stronger wind than the days before. Waiting till 1 O’clock till the conditions really kicked in it was time to finally get through against one of the top guys as I already had 3 times this year that I lost by half a point against them determent to do good I started with going for a one handed shaka which was not going like in practice as it ended up in a big crash giving Taty in the beginning of the heat the lead but after 2 min. of not finding my groove I got back into it and made the best out of the last 6 min putting a heat together with on the way in a perfect burner, fast culo, shakaflaka and double spock OH as my counting moves and on the way out, an Airflaka, big shaka, double puneta and another perfect Burner showing good diversity made me win against Taty who sailed a good heat but not his best one making me finally win the heat! Against Bjorn I had a less good heat and Bjorn an amazing heat giving the advantage to him leaving me on a 7th place putting myself again in that top 8.
JC/PWA
Today I saw how wavy Lanzarote can be in strong wind making me feel quite happy it wasn’t competition then hopefully I can do more jumps by next year so I would also be able to perform at least as well in these strong conditions! Will put pictures of today later online.
JC/PWA
Now I’m off to Grand Canaria for some waves to train my jumping and have a nice time to relax a bit after all the freestyling from the last month!

PWA Aruba

Hello everybody

It’s been a very long time since I wrote on my blog although I already had 2 events since my last update which both went very well. In my last update you could read my reports from on continentseven where I was reporting for them out of Bonaire where I finished in a six place which is my second best result from this year after my 5th place in Vietnam at the beginning of this year.

Afterwards we had a 2 day break before our or next competition here in Aruba would get started for another flat water spot on the tour before we will go to the Canaries again next week. On the first 2 days of the event the wind was playing a bit with the wind direction making it impossible to start the competition although in the gust there was enough to do all the planning and power moves but if you would get 2 bad gusts which both had another direction you would end up already out of the competition area making it impossible to start.

JC/PWA
The forecast for the last 2 days looked really good but in the end the wind didn’t become as strong as they said but at least the wind wasn’t shifting anymore the whole time but was still very gusty making it long heats from 9 min to give everybody the chance to get enough gust to get there 3 out of 6 moves on each tack to get the competition started! In my first heat against Chico I had a pretty good heat taking my time to find the right gust and get my moves done putting me in the next round. Against Nicolas I didn’t have my best heat as I was waiting a bit too long for the gust and didn’t really get my moves that good as the heat before but a big burner on the way in saved me putting me into the next heat and already in the top 8 in the first single. In the next heat I was up against Golitto determined to put a much better heat together than before I was fully focused to give my best shot. I putted my best heat of the event together landing a sick airfunnel 900, a pretty good kabikuchi and burners on both sides seeing Golitto not sailing at his best I knew it would be a close call. In the end I lost with a 2-1 decision losing by half a point putting the first single elimination to an end.
JC/PWA
In the double the wind was a bit stronger the next day making me wait for my opponent who still had to work himself up in the double thinking to meet Davy in my heat Flo gave the surprise of the day sailing home Davy Scheffers with the heat of his life putting himself into a well deserved top 16 place. In the end I met Tilo Eber who worked himself up again in the double to a top 10 place in this double to battle it out against me. I knew I couldn’t make another weak heat in the double sailing very focused made me advance against Taty Frans who lost in the single against his older brother Tonky. I had a good heat but it wasn’t enough to win against Taty as I was too fast over my 6 moves on each tack making my shaka on the way in not count and in the end would have made a difference whether I landed my last Kabikuchi attempt making Taty win and leaving me in a 7th place for the event which is another top 8 place making my goals for this 2 events more than true!

JC/PWA
Now I’m packing for Lanzarote for the next event of the PWA, hope the internet is doing it better there than it did in Aruba so I can make faster more updates!

Cheers Dieter

Podersdorf 2011 revieuw

Hello everybody!

It’s been since the First day of Podersdorf since I updated my blog, I wished I could have done more but somehow my laptop didn’t want to connect to the internet anymore so I had to wait till I was back home before I could get a blog update.

At the 3rd day of the PWA the wind kicked in for about 1 hour to get a few heats done and give me a moment to get used to the conditions. I put on my wetsuit when it was not even windy but I knew it would come as there was a rain cloud coming and the wind was already increasing and it was right after being in my wetsuit for 3 min the wind kicked in and I was the first man out there! Everything felt good and I couldn’t wait for the wind to kick in on Tuesday!

After a day without wind the wind fully came on Tuesday giving us full power conditions for 4.3 and 4.0 during the whole single elimination, everything went great with all my 3 heats good sailing. With big konos, culos and airfunnels I made myself part of the top 8 after the single elimination where I got stopped by Golitto Estredo, 4 times world champion although I had my best heat of the day with for sure my best shovit-spock ever!

The next day the double started at 6.30 in the morning in much lighter wind which went up and down the whole time making it difficult to decide on sail size. I would have to sail against Phil Soltysiak to keep my place in the double and stay in the top eight but it didn’t work out like I wanted. I got confused in which heat I was and just as I was going out to give my 5.3 a test run to decide between 4.7 & 5.3 when I saw the red flag going up for my heat and had to go out and sail with a setup I had not fully tested which gave me a big disadvantage.
I tried to make the best of it but the sail was too big and I could not reach the same level of sailing as the day before.  I still tried to do my best but I lost with a 2 to 1 decision losing by half a point against Phil who was really on fire with doing kono, culo and burner every heat and was for sure the hardest opponent for the top 8 riders to beat.

This meant a 9th place after the double which was a bit disappointing for me as I knew if I sailed like the day before I could have done better, but still top 10 so I hope I can sail top 10 every competition and hopefully even better!

Now I’m back home to study for a whole month before I will leave the 30th of May to Sardinia for the EFPT over there. But this weekend looks already windy so hopefully we still have a lot of sailing days left here in Europe!

End of Dahab and 1st day of Podesdorf

Hello everybody

Since my last blog update last week I still could surf good every single day I was in Dahab with some nice days of strong wind on a 4.0 and 4.3 to get me really prepared for podesdorf where I’m now for the moment. Everything was going perfect those days with probably the most sailing of the whole trip as the wind stayed a bit longer than normally and I was really waking up urly just to get that one more hour on the water than normally to get still as much as possible out of the trip.

All together it was another great trip with a lot of nice people again from Club Dahab. But also with Phil Richards from getwindsurfing.com who made all the pictures for my blog and was a great training partner on the water. Jjust like all the other sailors who where there making it another great 3 weeks in Dahab. With also 2 weeks out of 3 weeks sailing it was a good training trip to Dahab.

But as soon as I came home it had to go all very quick to get fast enough packed again for the PWA event in Podesdorf where I was leaving to the next day. So it was an evening of unpacking, washing and packing again as with only 14 hours at home I didn’t really have time to relax at home a little bit before I went away again. But all worked out fine and now I’m waiting in podesdorf for wind which probably want come the first 2 or 3 days, but the prediction for Wednesday looks really good so hopefully we still get some wind over here for a good result!

Keep also updated on my twitter update’s as I will put faster a new one of them as a new blog update, which I’ll probably do each 2 days as it’s not windy for the weekend.

Cheers Dieter

4day PWA Mui Ne

Hello everybody

Sorry for the late update from the last day of the competition but as it turned out it still were busy evenings the day after the competition, with the closing ceremony yesterday evening I didn't find the time to update yet.

My last day started with much lighter wind than the days before which put everybody on there biggest sails which for me was the 4.7 as in the gusts it was strong enough and was a good setup on my Flare 88 as my 5.3 is a bit big on that board. With Steven being out of the race through injury the fight for 5th place was totally open again which was my biggest goal in this double with my biggest opponants Phil Soltysiak and Anthony Ruenes as they ended up 7th in the last double elimination.

But first I had to make it past Yegor to end up against Phil. I had a pretty good heat although I was really underpowered in the beginning of the heat which made it a bit getting used to after been sailing fully powered up the past few days during the competition but all by all it worked out well landing my usual repertoir with Kono's, Culo's, Airflaka and Shaka both ways to make it trough my heat end get the deciding heat against Phil for who would end up 5th in this competition as Davy Sheffers who was on a role today kicked out Anthony Ruenes.

Against Phil I had a pretty good heat again although it wasn't my best performance of the competition not really feeling well in this lighter wind conditions but still ended up putting on a good show which was enough to secure my victory against Phil and my 5th place in the competition which was my main goal of the day but not anymore with the big heat like the days before. But 5th is 5th so I was already super happy when I won against Phil!!

Next up was Davy whom I already sailed against very much and was a well know opponent for me. That heat I sailed terribly bad with quite a lot of crashes and only a few good light points like a nice Kono and Burner on the way in but that was about it. I was more busy with the fact that I became 5th in the competition than with the fact I was still sailing a heat against a very good sailing Davy Sheffers which resulted in a well deserved win for Davy.

I was already really happy with my 5th place in the competition and got even more happy after Taty ended up 3rd and Kiri finally won his first PWA event!! With doing the sickest Culo OH pirouet I ever saw and made everyone on the beach going crazy!!

Now slalom has started and the wind died which results in very long days with no action to check out and hoping for wind the next 2 days so I still can have a surf before I sadly have to leave Vietnam again on my way home again to cold Europe!

Cheers Dieter

3 Day of competition Mui Ne

Hello everybody

Yesterday was the 3th day of the competition here in Vietnam and started the second single of the competition. The wind picked up again like usually at 1 O'clock to give the start signal for the first heats. Due my 6th place result in the double from the day before I was already in the second round where I would meet Bubble who advanced against Tilo who's not really lucky with he's opponents here.

The wind was pretty strong and I was actually a bit overpowered in the gusts on my 4.3 but made a perfect heat with my first skopu's in my live during a competition and finally some really good burners. True this moves I could advance against Bubble and would be up against Taty Frans again. To fight for a top 4 place.

It's pretty much an impossible jump but I gave my best, I started with a nice kono followed by one of my biggest shaka's on the way in so far for me. On the way out I didn't sail so perfect in the beginning but could pick up my game again in the second half of the heat and made another skopu on the way out. I also almost did one on the way in but just ruined it at the end when I actually already had the move so that was bit of a bummer. But still did Burner and culo coming in so had a pretty good heat! Effectually it was a very close call with a 2-1 decision losing by half a point from Taty which was really good but also a bit frustrating as I lost yesterday also by half a point against Steven.

The rest of the day where the finals with some great action and the first double loops from Taty and sick air chacho from Golitto. But on the way in it was Kiri who was really ruling against any other sailing doing everything in the air and at least 1 meter higher than the rest to secure he's first place again against Golitto who was really on fire today!

Today we have the double so I hope I can work up till 6th or even 5th place again as Steven was injured yesterday at he's knee from he's pushloop against Tonky the other day, but maybe will try to sail again today to defend he's 5th place, we will see!

Stay tuned

Cheers Dieter

PWA Mui Ne Day 2

Hello everybody!

Today we sailed the double elimination in a nice wind from around 25 knots with pretty much the same conditions as yesterday only maybe a bit lighter wind as I was now sailing on my 4.3 the whole day. Which was the perfect sail choice for me today.

As I became shared 5th in the first single elimination I had to wait 2 rounds before I could go on the water to do my first heat to defend my top 10 place and get ranked up higher. In my first heat I would meet Andy 'Bubble' Chambers who was really on fire yesterday with a good heat against tonky but now had to fight his way up again till me. And was having a consistent sailing again today. So in the double we got right up into the strong heat already and for sure no easy heat in this doulbe. Against Bubble I did a great heat, I was focussed and managed to get some really good moves like, Kono, Shaka-flaka, toad, burner and some more nice moves which made me pretty sure I would win this heat against Bubble which I did.

In the next heat I would be up against Phil Soltysiak from Canada who was the only one who could end up in the top 4 on one of the events last year beside the normal top 5 combination, and was ranked 6th last year overall which would make it a really hard heat! But it just started perfect because I started my heat with a huge kono which felt really high, and like I was told afterwards by the judges was one of the best kono's so far of the competition. This gave me confidence to put on a good heat for the rest of it and get me to sail to victory to get in the top 6 which before I came to vietnam was not even possible in my wildest dreams so was really stooked to hear that I won against Phil who was also sailing very good.

Next up was Steven van Broeckhoven, so a Belguim heat fighting to get in the top 5. I know from before it would almost be impossible to beat Steven as he did very well last year and was again in good shape this year but I gave it my best shot. The heat was going pretty well but during my attempt for a toad on the way out I lost a lot of hight which I had to gain back and lost some time also with a crashed move. In the end I did some good moves like a kono followed by a culo right in front of the judges. And managed to get a burner but not a really good one which was not good to be able to win this heat but on the way out I had a great run with airflaka, shakaflaka and ending with a nice double ss chacho gave me still a chance against Steven. In the end Steven won like I already thought before the heat but it was really close only losing by half a point which gave me a great feeling that I was on the right way that I even can put some pressure on the top 5.

In the end it was a great day with for the moment a 6th possition after the double which is a good start from the competition, 2 more days so maybe we still can finish another double although the windpredictions give only wind for one more day but we will see!!

stay tuned!!

Cheers Dieter

PWA Mui Ne day 1

Hello everybody

After some good days of training here in Mui Ne with lots of wind.Today finally started the competition here in Mui Ne, with some great wind around 25 knts what gave some great action. With only 25 competotors here in Vietnam I was already seeded for the second round against Nicolas Ackyzcian from France. After the skippersmeeting at 1 a.m. we had one hour to warm up before the competition would start at 2 a.m. . During my warmup I didn't really feel so great in my sailing but still was sailing okay to give me some good confidence for my heat against Nicolas.

The heat before my heat I went upwind from the course area and went to put myself ready at the beach from jibe's where everybody gave me tumbs up for my heat and gave me a great motivation to go and sail a good heat. I was using my S-1 4.3 on my flare 88 which was perfect for the wind not really overpowerd which you don't want to be in the chop here. As my heat started I had full concentration and started of with a great Kono on the way in followed by shovit (while attempting a shaka) and than following with a nice Funnel oh. Which gave me so much confidence for the rest of my heat. In the end I did almost all the moves I wanted like Culo, Shaka, airflaka, funnel 900° and so on. To end with a Toad on the way out which I just learned here and don't land that save yet so I was super happy! When I came back and I heard I won I realised I got for the first time in the top 8 at a single elimination already.

My next heat was against Taty who was really sailing well, which ended up in a very bad heat for me, I started fine with a kono and a shaka on the way in but afterwarteds it only whend wourse, I think the top moment for me still was in that heat when I went for a massive shaka and ended up doing it al in the air to crash like coming out of an over rotated Airflaka. So I knew I lost already before I came to the beach. Next time better I would say! And still I made it in the top 8 which made me very happy! Also see Kiri winning on he's birthday was very nice, the finals where sick to watch and gave me an idee where I still have to go and work for!

Tommorow we have the double so I hope I can get to 7th place or maybe better will see.

Stay tuned!

Cheers Dieter

Sylt day 5-7

hello everybody

After my last update and after ore first single there was not much action going on anymore beside's just hanging around in the Sailorsclub and watching the slalom during the first day. The wind that day was maybe even a bit stronger than when we had to sail ore single but the gust where les strong so it ended up in a race who could make the best out of the lowwind conditions. Bjorn sailed a very solid heat and didn't give Albeau any chance to take him over again which made him win the first day of racing.

The second day the wind was totally away and there was not much to do till they decided to go for a tow in freestyle session right in front of all the people. Golitto, Steven, Taty, Tonky and Nicolas gave their best shot and landed some sick moves but also sick crashes right in front of a beach full of people. The sickest crash was the one from golitto when he over rotated his burner which gave a big crash. Taty did a perfect dubbel funnel to take with it the 3the place after Golito with his over rotated burner. The king in tow in from Austria stayed undivided with landing first a perfect culo in no wind and on he's last running doing a massive airfunnel into funnel where he launched himself perfectly in the air and in my point of view actually could have jumped around the whole way but maybe that's for the next time!

The third day from this blog there was not much going on during the day, no wind no tow in and so also no action, just watching the action of the quicksilver pro surf in France on the live stream to make the day pas faster away. In the evening although we went out to celebrate Bjorn Saragoza his 19the birthday which he became at 12 O'clock so again Happy Birthday Bjorn!

So that is it for this blog as for the moment the slalom just started again in 16 to 22 knots but full offshore so no chance for freestyle in the front, maybe the next days!!

Cheers Dieter

Sylt Day 2-4

hello everybody

The past days been very busy with staying standby on the beach as I was in one of the first heats.

Day 2 was still okay with some relaxing and watching the surfers taking the nice waves there where that day and also enjoying the sun for the last day before the wind should kick in for the next day.

Day 3 started with a lot of rain, wet clothes and cold temperatures compared to day 2. The wind was nothing but as I was already in my wetsuit because it was warmer than my wet jeans and wet sweater I could borrow a surfboard from Max Droege and could catch some nice waves after one year without normal surfing. After being 3 hours in the water I went to rent a bike to ride to my tent to get some dry clothes and by the time I came back the wind kicked in and I could put my wetsuit back on again. The wind was really light and by the time it was my heat it dropped totally so my heat got cancelled. Time to go home and have a good sleep for the next day.

Day 4 we finished a whole single in very light conditions with 12 minuts heats to make sure everybody got there moves. After 3 times we finally got enough wind for my heat and I could pass to the next round altough it was far from my best heat and it was pretty close. The next heat was against Kiri with even less wind then before I could only try 3 moves on the way out which I all landed but was not good enough to land my shaka on the way out clean enough which would maybe made the diffrence between winning and losing. in the end I lost my heat with a 2-1 decision which is very close against vice worldchampion from last year! The conditions didn't inprove anymore but stayed the same and in the half final was pretty good again where I saw some really good sailing from all the guys and especially from Taty with a sick kono and double spock coming in and Steven who just crashed the biggest kono of the day and made him lose from Gollito. In the finals the conditions where really getting crazy with a lot of non planning moments and a lot of pomping and was both really close till Golitto pulled out in the last minute a ponch and a burner out of no where!! Now the day is over and we at least already have one result will see wat the next days will say!

Cheers!

Sylt Day 1

hello everybody

Since yesterday morning I arrived at Sylt together with Maarten van Ochten and Paul Zeper who's car we drove with. Although we missed our train and drove too far that we even ended up in Denmark and arrived at the boat to Sylt on the next island. But after some searching we eventually found the train station to Sylt and could go on the train at 5 in the morning after waiting the whole night.

After we arrived we just started to rig up everything and find a place in the equipment tent to make sure we still would have place. After doing this Paul drove me to the campsite which is 20 min. walking from the competition area and started to built up my tent for the rest of the week.

Afterwards I went back to the beach to sign me in and welcome Yarden Meir who came here for his first PWA event ever! Than the day went on with some relaxing and sleeping as I only slept 3 hours during the night and ended with the opening ceremony for all the crowd here in Sylt.

Afterwards I went for an early sleep to be rested for the 2nd Day here at Sylt and first day of competition.

Cheers Dieter
